Description

This study explores the factors contributing to truancy in open-site schools, the impact of the open-site environment on student attendance, and potential strategies for reducing truancy. A qualitative case study design was employed, involving 15 Form Two students and 5 teachers/administrators from Saniel Technical Institute. The findings reveal that students experience truancy due to lack of motivation, personal issues, lack of engagement, and freedom. The open-site environment can make it harder for students to stay motivated and accountable. The study recommends increasing supervision and accountability, providing more support systems and resources, and improving communication with parents to reduce truancy. The findings have implications for practice, suggesting that schools can reduce truancy by providing more support systems and resources, increasing supervision and accountability, and fostering stronger relationships between teachers, students, and parents.
